For a straightforward arrival, take an auto-rickshaw or cab from Agra Cantt to a named gate-side parking area:

  • West Gate: ask for Amrood ka Teela parking.
  • East Gate: ask for Shilpgram parking.

The West Gate is the practical default from Agra Cantt if the Taj Mahal is your first stop. The official travel guide says this gate faces Agra Cantonment and Agra city. Choose the East Gate instead when your hotel or meeting point is around Fatehabad Road, Taj East Gate Road or Shilpgram. Do not plan to enter through the South Gate; it currently permits exits only (official gate information).

Choosing a ride at Agra Cantt

Auto-rickshaw

An auto is a simple option for one or two travellers without bulky luggage. Tell the driver which parking area you want rather than asking vaguely for “the Taj Mahal.” Before leaving, agree on the fare and confirm that it covers the one-way transfer—not a sightseeing tour or a wait-and-return service.

Useful destination phrases are:

  • “Taj Mahal West Gate, Amrood ka Teela parking”
  • “Taj Mahal East Gate, Shilpgram parking”

UP Tourism lists taxis, tempos, auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws and prepaid taxis among Agra’s local transport options (Taj Mahal travel information). It does not publish a dependable current fare for this particular transfer, so compare the amount requested with any live cab-app quote rather than relying on an old fixed price.

App cab or taxi

A cab is generally easier with suitcases, children or several passengers. Enter Amrood ka Teela or Shilpgram as the destination and check that the driver has understood the intended gate.

A cab cannot take you to the monument entrance itself. UP Tourism says polluting vehicles are barred within 500 metres of the Taj Mahal and identifies Shilpgram for East Gate parking and Amrood ka Teela for West Gate parking. Battery buses and golf carts operate between the parking areas and the gates (official visitor guidance). Walking the approach is another option.

Pre-arranged driver

A hotel pickup or pre-booked driver can reduce negotiation after a train journey. It is most useful if you have a short same-day visit or intend to continue to Agra Fort before returning to the station.

Confirm whether the quote covers only the station-to-Taj transfer or includes waiting and further travel. Do not assume those are the same service.

Metro

The Metro is not a direct Agra Cantt-to-Taj connection. UPMRC’s operating journey planner shows Taj East Gate, Shaheed Captain Shubham Gupta, Fatehabad Road, Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Mankameshwar Mandir on the current section; Agra Cantt is not on it (UPMRC journey planner).

The Metro can be useful later between the East Gate side and Agra Fort, but reaching it from Agra Cantt first requires a road transfer. With luggage, going directly to the chosen gate-side parking area is simpler.

Which Taj Mahal gate should you use?

West Gate: the default from Agra Cantt

Use the West Gate when you are travelling directly from the railway station and have no reason to approach from the east. The official guide describes it as the main entrance and says it faces Agra Cantonment and Agra city (official gate information).

Ask for Amrood ka Teela parking. The official visiting-hours page places the West Gate ticket outlet near Saheli Burj, although counter arrangements should be checked before relying on them (official visiting hours).

East Gate: for Shilpgram and the Fatehabad Road side

Use the East Gate when:

  • your accommodation is around Fatehabad Road or Taj East Gate Road;
  • a guide or group has specified Shilpgram;
  • you want to use Taj East Gate Metro station after the visit; or
  • you are already approaching from the eastern side of Taj Ganj.

Ask for Shilpgram parking, then walk or use an available battery bus or golf cart. The official travel page says the East Gate faces Taj Nature Walk and Fatehabad Town (official gate information). Queue lengths can change with security screening and group arrivals, so do not choose a gate solely on claims that one is always quieter.

South Gate: no entry

The South Gate is not an arrival option. Official Taj Mahal and ASI information identifies it as closed for entry; only exit is allowed (ASI Agra Circle visitor information).

Allow for more than the drive

Do not treat a map’s road estimate as the full station-to-entry time. You still need to leave the platform, find a vehicle, travel through city traffic, cover the parking-to-gate section and pass security.

Leave extra margin if your train may be delayed or if you have a timed onward plan. There is no single dependable transfer time across different traffic conditions and arrival platforms.

Tickets, bags and Friday closure

Buying online before setting out is the safer plan. UP Tourism’s official pages are internally inconsistent: its ticketing page is headed “tickets only through online,” yet that page and the visiting-hours page also mention ticket windows at the East and West gates. An advance online ticket avoids depending on a counter being available (official ticket information). Carry government-issued identity proof.

Travel light. ASI lists food, smoking items, large bags and briefcases among prohibited items, while the Taj Mahal visitor guidance warns that large bags can slow security checks (ASI prohibited-items list). If you arrive with railway luggage, arrange storage with your accommodation or confirm an appropriate facility before travel rather than taking a large case to the gate.

The Taj Mahal is closed to general viewing every Friday. On normal opening days, the official timetable says it opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset (Taj Mahal visiting hours). Recheck official information shortly before the visit because ticket and access arrangements can change.

Take an auto or cab from Agra Cantt to Amrood ka Teela for the West Gate, unless your hotel, guide or next stop makes Shilpgram and the East Gate more convenient.
